BRICK AND MORTAR
HOLLYWOOD IMPROV
Located at the epicenter of the entertainment world, the legendary Hollywood Improv opened decades ago and continues to deliver a combination of A-list comedy, great food and strong cocktails. In the days leading up to its 1975 opening, a young Jay Leno could be found helping paint the ceilings. The club’s iconic brick wall and trademark piano have become symbols of stand-up comedy around the globe. Hollywood Improv is recognized for developing the careers of countless comedy superstars and providing the setting for the popular television show, “An Evening at the Improv.”
As in New York, the next generation of artists and entertainment executives worked the Improv—on stage, in the house, and behind the bar. Actor/comedian Adam Devine (“Workaholics,” “Pitch Perfect”), comedy manager Jimmy Miller (Jim Carrey), and writer/producer/director Judd Apatow (“The 40 Year-Old Virgin” “Knocked Up”) were part of the fraternity of door managers. Actress Debra Winger (“Urban Cowboy,” “Terms of Endearment”) and writer Callie Khouri (“Thelma & Louise”) were waitresses. And the very first bartender was actor/comedian Kevin Nealon (“SNL,” “Weeds”).

When the Improv opened in Irvine in 1987, Orange County residents suddenly had a slice of Hollywood in their own backyard. A pre-sitcom Jerry Seinfeld was Irvine Improv’s Opening Night headliner. And since that amazing summer night, the Improv has been providing Orange County with the biggest and brightest stars in entertainment.
Irvine Improv is located in the Irvine Spectrum Center. Known for its stunning architecture, the design for the luxury outdoor shopping center was inspired by the world-famous Alhambra– 13th century citadel overlooking the city of Granada, Spain. The Spectrum features Alhambra design cues such as buildings united by magnificent courtyards, an exotic blend of classical architecture, and a colorful overlay of Spanish tile mosaics and elaborate carvings.

Originally constructed in 1904, the theater is a turn-of-the-century time capsule featuring a marble and gold leaf lobby, adorned with a curated collection of art telling the stories of the Improv Comedy Clubs and The Jose Theatre. Step into the showroom to find perfect relics of a bygone era– ornamental plaster details, stamped tin ceiling tiles, and two-stories-tall red velvet curtains flanking the iconic brick wall.
In the early 1900s, the theatre featured vaudeville acts and silent films with orchestral accompaniment. Some locals may recall hanging out at The Jose all afternoon, watching kung fu double feature films for under a dollar. For over one hundred years, The Jose Theatre has survived fires, earthquakes, and the sands of time. As home to the iconic Improv brand, the venue is renewed and will continue bringing best-in-class entertainment to audiences for decades to come.
